Union Urges UK Govt To Approve Third Runway At Heathrow

Construction News Image
GMB Union has urged the UK Government to approve plans for a third runway to be built at Heathrow.

It is estimated around 370,000 tonnes of UK steel could be used on the project, which GMB said would provide a "much needed boost" for the steel production industry.

In addition, the expansion could sustain 700 jobs related to the industry in a five-year period between 2021 – 2026.

Tim Roache, GMB General Secretary said "The amount of steel that will be required to build this major project will be a much needed boost for the UK steel industry, steel workers and their communities. This is another good reason for the UK government to make a decision quickly in support of Heathrow expansion."

Mick Rix, GMB National Officer for Civil Aviation, added: "Theresa May needs to get a shift on and make a decision on the 3rd runway at Heathrow as a matter of urgency. 180,000 new jobs, 10,000 apprenticeships and the economic benefits of up to £211bn depend on the expansion of Heathrow airport so we urge the Government to announce the go-ahead, as recommended by the Airport Commission, without any further delay."
