Builders' merchant sales in the second quarter increased by 6.2% compared with the same three months last year, according to new analysis.

The figures released by the Builders Merchant Federation (BMF) also showed a significant growth in the landscaping and ironmongery sectors.

John Newcomb, Managing Director of the BMF, said: "Most forecasts predicted, and are continuing to predict, a worsening construction market post Brexit. But these fears appear to be unwarranted. In fact, our members are reporting record growth in some sectors like landscaping, and overall total sales in quarter two are 13.7% ahead of quarter one.

"We believe that the recent cut in interest rates will help to boost this growth, and I am very confident that our members will continue to show robust performances in quarter three.

"As a leading trade association, the BMF will work with the Government to ensure the best outcomes for our members as the Brexit deal is negotiated, and the new Government sets out its priorities."
