A school in Essex has been fined for safety failings after a worker fell from a roof during maintenance work.
Brentwood School Charitable Incorporated Organisation, Brentwood, Essex, pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 4(1) of the Work at Height Regulations 2005.
It was fined £40,000 with £1,477 in costs.
Chelmsford Crown Court heard how the victim, a 63-year-old man, was part of a maintenance team working to replace components on a bay window of a residential flat in the school's ground in January 2014.
However while the man was working on the roof of the bay window, his foot became caught and he fell around 2.6 metres to the ground. His injuries included a broken collarbone and chipped vertebrae.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found there were no effective guardrails or any other means of protection to prevent workers from falling from the roof. In addition, there were no supervisory arrangements and the work was not carried out in a safe manner.
