Network Rail is to begin a railway station improvement project in North Yorkshire.

Engineers will start the 12-week project at Knaresborough station from Monday, 22 August.

Works include making the station's buildings more watertight as well as carrying out repairs to the chimney stack on the signal box.

The improvements are part of Network Rail's £40 billion Railway Upgrade Plan and additional funding has been secured from the Railway Heritage Trust, enabling cosmetic improvements to be carried out at the same time as the structural work.

Network Rail's area director, Mark Tarry, said: "The building has suffered from damp which our team will be fixing as well as tidying up the outside of the building, replacing the guttering and pipes and improving the station environment for passengers. The Chimney stack at Knaresborough signal box dates from around the late 1800s. This will be removed and rebuilt as part of the project."
