Work is underway to seek a contractor for a £15.7 million transport project in Wigan.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has opened a prequalification which will select a construction firm to build a new bus station on the site of the current Wigan Bus Station.

Plans for the project were approved in April 2016, which involves altering the layout of the station from three 'island platforms' to a modern covered concourse building with 19 'Drive In Reverse Out' (DIRO) stands.

Other features include a new ticket and information outlet, retail facilities, cycle parking, fully accessible toilets and electronic information screens.

Chair of the TfGM Committee, Cllr Andrew Fender, said: "We're excited to open prequalification to potential tenderers. This is a fantastic £15.7million project to improve Wigan bus station. We aim to provide a better waiting environment, improved facilities for passengers and a more modern gateway to the town for both residents and visitors.

"The development is being supported by central government through the Greater Manchester Local Growth Deal Programme."
