Highways England is underway with work to install new snow poles on the A66 road in Country Durham.
The 10-week scheme will be carried out in 2.5 mile stretches between the Bowes snow gates and the Cumbrian border.
In order for contractors to deliver the project safely, lane closures will be in effect as well as a 50mph speed limit
Chris Corcoran, project manager at Highways England, said: "The new snow poles will be more visible and easier to maintain in future.
"Keeping the lane closed overnight significantly improves safety for our contractors as the lane restrictions don't need to be removed and replaced at the start or end of every shift.
"We will be making every effort to complete other jobs such as vegetation clearance overnight while the lane closures are in place."
