A company has been fined after a worker was crushed by a three-tonne road roller.

Quantum Exhibitions & Displays Ltd of Brow Mills Industrial estate, Hipperholme pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. It was fined £70,000 with over £4,139 in costs.

Calderdale Magistrates Court heard the 26-year-old labourer was injured at the the company's site in November 2015.

The worker was using the vibrating road roller when the machine slid down a steep incline and pinned him beneath it.

His injuries included several breaks to his right leg tibia and fibula bones along with burns to his right hand and an open fracture of the index finger.

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector Jacqueline Ferguson said: "There was no vehicle restraint or edge protection system in place to prevent vehicles from approaching the unstable edge of the embankment with the foreseeable risk of the vehicle overturning. This was a serious accident that could have proved fatal.

"Companies should be aware that the HSE will not hesitate to take appropriate action against those that fall below the required standards."
