A major milestone has been reached on the £14.8 billion Crossrail project in London.

Almost 75% of the scheme is now complete and two new platforms have been installed at the new Elizabeth line station at Liverpool Street.

The two 240-metre long platforms were pre-fabricated in more than 500 pieces before being transported to London, lowered down the station's main shaft and pieced together below ground.

The project took around four months to complete and forms part of a programme to install nearly four kilometres of platforms at stations in central London.

Rohan Perin, Crossrail Project Manager at Liverpool Street station said: "Assembling the two platforms piece by piece over the last few months has been a bit like putting together a giant jigsaw puzzle. Prefabricating and then assembling the sections together on site has meant that we can get on with the job quickly and safely."

The Elizabeth line station at Liverpool Street is to open in December 2018, with the full Crossrail route complete by 2019.
