Improvement work is to begin at the Barnsley Main site to mark the 150th anniversary of the Oaks Disaster, the worst mining disaster in English history.

The Barnsley Central Area Team is working with the Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, to deliver a community clean up at the site on Sunday, 10 July.

The Grade 2 Listed buildings are all that remain of the once much larger Barnsley Main Colliery. The site has been mined since the early 19th century under different names, including the Oaks Colliery.

Councillor Brian Mathers will be leading a walk and talk around the site, telling the industrial history of the area.

Cllr Brian Mathers said: "Barnsley Main is an incredibly important part of our history and the link with the Oaks Colliery Disaster makes it even more poignant that this work is starting now. I would encourage everyone to help with this project and let's give Barnsley Main the attention it deserves."
