Engineers have began work to repair a section of railway between Buxton and Manchester.

Up to 6,000 tonnes of material was washed away from the track after flash floods on 12 and 13 June.

Workers will rebuild a section of embankment as well as replace track and ballast near Middlewood station.

In addition, other materials from nearby land and the railway will be removed, while several sections of the cutting slope will be repaired.

Terry Strickland, area director for Network Rail, said: "Nearly two inches of rain in less than two hours is fairly exceptional and the damage it caused to the railway was not insignificant."

A spokesman for Network Rail said passengers will be told "at the earliest opportunity" once a reopening date is confirmed.
