Environmental consultant the River Stewardship Company (RSC) has been selected to carry out work on a £19 million flood protection project in Sheffield.

The Lower Don Valley Flood Defence Project spans 8km and aims to protect over 500 businesses from flooding.

Stretching between the Wicker and Blackburn Brook, the development of physical flood defences is set for completion in summer 2017.

Features include installing over 50 interventions between Nursery Street and Blackburn Brook, building reinforced concrete walls and developing new footpath/cycle paths.

RSC has been working on a pilot project on the River Don for the last two years.

It will help manage riverside trees and invasive plants, as well as helping to remove litter and debris, until June 2019.

Cllr Bryan Lodge said: "The River Stewardship Company will continue with the great work they've done so far to maintain the river at the Lower Don Valley. It's an essential part of the flood defence scheme, that once complete will protect hundreds of businesses from the devastating effects of flooding."
