Construction Firm Fined For On-Site Safety Failings

A Cardiff-based construction firm has been fined after safety failings were discovered on a redevelopment site in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

Ziman Trading Limited, of Cefn Coed Road, Cyncoed, Cardiff, pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 13(1) of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 and Section 33(1)(G) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.

It was fined £50,000 with costs of £5,478.

Pontypridd Magistrates' Court heard the firm was acting as principal contractor to redevelop the former New York Hotel in Porth.

A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found the company had failed to ensure appropriate measures were in place to control risks onsite, including falls from height, exposure to asbestos and the risk from fire.

In addition, the company failed to effectively plan and manage the work which put workers at risk. Ziman also did not cooperate with HSE's investigation and failed to comply with enforcement action.
