Network Rail is to begin a £6 million flood alleviation project on the railway line between Fulwell and Shepperton, it has been announced.

The scheme involves carrying out drainage upgrades, especially at Fulwell Tunnel, and replacing the signalling system. A new pumping station will also be built.

The work is part of the company's £40 billion railway upgrade plan.

Hector Kidds, Senior Asset Engineer at Network Rail, said: "Passengers travelling on the Fulwell to Shepperton line will know all too well the problems flooding can cause.

"Over the years a number of solutions have been attempted, but this time we're taking a different approach, installing a new pumping station that will significantly reduce the impact of flooding on passenger train services"

The project is due to begin this summer, with the new signalling system being bought into use in October 2017.
