New figures have shown the number of new home registrations are up 17% compared to the same period last year.

A total of 14,228 homes were registered with the National House-Building Council (NHBC) in April, with 11,258 in the private sector and 2,970 in the public sector.

During the same period last year, there were 12,201 registered home (8,988 private sector, 3,212 public sector).

In addition, completions were also up 4% for the month compared to last April, with 10,378 in 2016 and 10,005 in 2015.

However. between February and April, there were 40,399 new home registrations, a 1% decrease compared to last year (40,877).

NHBC Chief Executive Mike Quinton said the figures for April show that the industry "enjoyed a successful month".

"For the rolling quarter, new home registration volumes are virtually identical, demonstrating further consolidation on last year's levels," he said.

"During these periods of sustained industry activity and production, NHBC remains committed to ensuring the highest possible quality in the standards of the UK's new homes."
