A major milestone has been reached on a £27.5 million building project for the University of Huddersfield.

Main contractor Morgan Sindall has held a topping out ceremony for the Oastler Building development.

Planning consent for the project was achieved in April 2015.

The six-storey 7,500 sq m building is being built opposite the Shorehead roundabout between Queensgate and Wakefield Road in the town.

It will become a new home for the university's Law School and the School of Music, Humanities and Media.

Providing a new gateway to both the university and the town centre, features will include new teaching space such as large tiered lecture theatres.

Pat Boyle, MD of Construction at Morgan Sindall, said: "It is fantastic to see the building reach this stage and be here to celebrate the milestone with the university and other stakeholders.

"We are sure the people of the town, the university's students and staff will thoroughly enjoy this building once it is open and operating.'

The building is scheduled for completion in 2017.
