Former Minister of State for Energy Charles Hendry is to lead an Independent Review of Tidal Lagoon energy in the UK, it has been announced.
He will be supported by a team of seconded civil servants throughout the audit.
The Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) announced in February it was suspending support for the £1 billion Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon scheme pending a six-month review of the wider tidal power sector.
The review will assess the strategic case for the renewable energy method and whether it "could play a cost effective role as part of the UK energy mix".
In addition, the report will help establish an evidence base to ensure all decisions regarding tidal lagoon energy are "in the best interest of the UK".
The reviews findings are expected to be announced in autumn.
