Network Rail has revealed a new code of conduct for contractors working to deliver its £40 billion Railway Upgrade Plan.

The guideline will ensure around 250,000 people carrying out the multi-billion programme meet minimum standards on safety, and treat customers and communities with politeness and respect.

In addition, suppliers must sign up to the company's 'ten lifesaving rules' to ensure everyone is kept safe, while also highlighting expected standards of training for all staff working on behalf of the rail operator.

Mark Carne, chief executive of Network Rail, said making sure contractors behave in a "professional and appropriate way" is of "critical importance" to the organisation.

"We want to work together with those who share our determination to continuously improve this area. We want to provide clarity on what we expect from our people and the support they can expect from us. This code of conduct will help us do that," he said.
