Preparatory works are underway on a major redevelopment project in Dover, it has been announced.

Following the completion of demolition and main archaeological investigations, work has begun to prepare the eight-acre St James site for construction.

Earthworks and utility diversions are taking place to provide 120,000 sq ft of new retail and leisure space in the heart of Dover town centre.

Features include temporary levelling and piling works.

Paul Ceasar, Project Manager for developers, Bond City, said: "We'd like to thank the local community for their support during the ongoing works, and the Canterbury Archaeological Trust and their volunteers who completed 215 days of excavations on the site."

Tim Ingleton, the council's Head of Inward Investment, added: "Work starting on the foundations of the St James development is another key milestone in our plans to reinvigorate Dover town centre.  Investor and tenant interest in the scheme remains strong."
