Around £15 million is to be invested in upgrading railway signalling in South Yorkshire, Network Rail has confirmed.
The programme will see the control of signals around Sheffield, Rotherham, Swinton and Mexborough moved to a modern Rail Operating Centre (ROC) in York.
The project will be carried out over the bank holiday weekend of Sunday, 01 Mary and Monday, 02 May.
All lines are set to reopen on Tuesday, 03 May.
Rob McIntosh, route MD for Network Rail, said: "Moving the signalling to the ROC is an important step in our £40bn Railway Upgrade Plan to provide a bigger, better more reliable railway for passengers and means that passenger and freight services become more reliable, while also helping to bring down the cost of running the railway."
