Work is underway on a £20 million refurbishment project at RAF Valley in Wales.

A joint venture (JV) between North Stone and White Mountain will resurface one of two runways at the military base on the Isle of Anglesey.

The year-long project is expected to be completed in February 2017

The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) awarded the contract to the JV last month.

Enabling works are now underway in conjunction with the Isle of Anglesey County Council as well as small works on the station.

Overall, the JV will refurbish the runway, link taxiways and provide a new section of airside perimeter road, new visual aids, aeronautical lighting and signage.

The works are expected to extend the life of the runway by a further 25 years.

Alan Baker, DIO's Project Manager, said: "I am pleased that work is now underway and look forward to working with personnel at the station and our contractors to ensure everything continues to run smoothly throughout the project, to provide this vital upgrade for the pilots and groundcrew at RAF Valley."
