Galvanizing Firm Contributes To Hospital Redevelopment Projects

Construction News Image
A leading galvanizing company is celebrating after playing its part in the multi-million pound 3Ts Redevelopment project at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals.

Wessex Galvanizers, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, has provided its hot dip galvanizing treatment to over 55 tonnes of structural steelwork on behalf of long-standing customers, Littlehampton Welding Ltd. The steel has been used to form column strengthening underneath the courtyards of Brighton-based Royal Sussex County Hospital, to allow a grillage base for temporary portacabins to be built upon as well as staircases and a large access ramp.

The 3Ts Redevelopment of the hospital commenced in January 2015 and is expected to be fully complete by 2024, with the project split into three major stages. The £420million upgrade will see two new state-of-the-art buildings on the front half of the site, with all clinical services continuing to operate throughout the lifetime of the project.

Julian Gilbert, Technical Administrator at Littlehampton Welding Ltd, explained: 'We were called upon by our client, Laing O'Rourke to supply and fit various strengthening steelwork for the hospital's courtyard, as well as provide and fit staircases for the front car park. We have worked with the team at Wessex Galvanizers for many years and chose them for this particular project due to the architect specifying the finish due to its long-term sustainability and protection against the elements.”

The ongoing project has seen work to replace the cabins on the hospital's North Service Road, adjacent to the Accident and Emergency drop-off area, as well as a separate £3million project to replace the windows, resurface the roof and make internal alterations to the hospital.

Richard Whiddett, Sales Manager at Wessex Galvanizers, added: 'We're thrilled to be involved in this project and to provide our specialist protective finish to various elements of the 3Ts Redevelopment. We've worked with Littlehampton Welding Ltd on various projects throughout the years and look forward to continuing this project alongside them in the months and years ahead."
