Improvement work has been completed at a railway bridge in Swindon, Network Rail has announced.

The Stratton Green structure is now open again to the public following work to prepare the bridge for electrification.

The reconstruction was part of Network Rail's £40 billion Railway Upgrade Plan as well as the Great Western Electrification Programme.

Work got underway to upgrade the bridge in November 2015, with additional space created for overhead lines that will power the new fleet of electric trains.

Andy Haynes, Network Rail's project director for the west of England, said: "The team worked hard to ensure the reconstruction was completed in as short a timeframe as possible and that it was finished on time.

"Now the bridge has reopened, residents and businesses in Swindon are a step closer to the benefits that electrification and the new electric trains will bring."
