BAM Nuttall has secured a deck refurbishment contract for the Tower Bridge in London.

The design and build deal was awarded on an ECI basis by City of London Corporation.

Site investigation work is currently underway to determine the bridge decks condition, after which a detailed design programme will be worked up.

The project is likely to involve replacing substrates beneath the running surface of the deck, carry out steel repairs to the bascules and waterproofing to the approaches.

Construction will begin in October with an estimated completion time by the end of 2016.

Mark Bailey, Principal Engineer, City of London Corporation said: "We are delighted to have appointed BAM Nuttall to develop the site investigations and design for this important piece of work for one of London's most iconic landmarks.

"The City of London Corporation looks forward to working with them in the coming months, culminating in the works to re-deck the bascules, replace bridge expansion joints & resurface the fixed spans, as well as waterproof the approach viaduct arches."
