Falling workloads in the infrastructure sector is threatening UK economic growth, according to the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA).

Recent ONS figures show at 0.4% fall in the last three months of 2015, while new infrastructure work fell 3.9%.

The recent CECA Workload Trends Survey 2015 Q4 revealed just 5% of British firms reported an increase in work, the lowest balance since 2013 Q2.


Overall, seven out of 10 industry sectors reported a declining wokloads.

CECA Chief Executive Alasdair Reisner said the "sluggish" performance indicates the infrastructure sector is "yet to reach its full potential".

"What we are seeing is an alarming plateau in infrastructure orders, when we should be seeing strong growth, according to the Government's forecasts," he said.

"Infrastructure investment is a strong driver of growth in the wider economy.

"We call on the Government takes steps to shore up the UK economy by ensuring that its planned capital investment in the sector goes ahead without delay."
