Eric Wright Group has begun a Special Educational Needs (SEN) redevelopment project in Blackpool.
The builder is transforming the former Westbury Lodge council office block into a 4,000 sq ft SEN facility.
The 18-week six figure project, designed by architects Cassidy + Ashton, is being delivered by the Group's Special Projects division.
Works include part demolition and remodelling the three-storey building to accommodate up to 50 young people aged 16 -19.
It will comprise of specialist facilities designed for children with learning difficulties and educational needs.
Previously, the building had been a children's home before being converted into office space and had remained empty until work began at the end of last year.
Stephen Knowles, head of Eric Wright Special Projects, added: "Works of this nature require exceptional attention to detail and our extensive experience in education ensures that we're able to meet the diverse needs of all those involved."
Cllr Graham Cain added: "The work taking place at Westbury Lodge not allows us to re-use an old building that had been standing dormant but it will also increase the capacity for young people with special educational needs to continue education after they've left secondary education."
The project has been approved by Blackpool Council as part of the Local Education Partnership.
It is due for completion by April.
