Work Progresses On £6.4m Bridge Project In Devon

Work is progressing on a bridge installation project in Devon, Highways England has announced.

The new £6.4 million Merafield Bridge is being developed over the A38 at Plympton.

However, to allow construction work to continue, additional lane and overnight closures are required from Monday, 08 February.

Three lanes along a two mile stretch of the A38 will be turned into two lanes for approximately six weeks.

This will allow for new drainage to be installed and additional equipment, including a 750-tonne crane, to be brought onto the site.

The new bridge structure installation is due to begin on Monday, 22 February. A four-mile stretch of the A38 will be closed for seven nights to enable steel beams and concrete deck units to be lifted into place.

The final sections will be installed from Thursday, 17 March over a two night period.

Highways England project manager Justin Marr said: "Construction of the bridge pier is well advanced and once completed; the next stage of the work will involve lifting the new bridge structure into place."

The project is due to be completed by July 2016.
