Graham Construction has reached a 'major milestone' on a building project for the University of York.

The contractor has completed the structural framework for the University's new £8.9 million Spring Lane teaching building.

A topping out ceremony was held this week to mark the construction milestone.

Designed by architects Race Cottam Associates, the three-storey building is being built at the Heslington West Campus in the city.

It includes a 350-person lecture theatre and 26 seminar rooms, each of which can house 20 students.

A large social learning space on the second floor for solo and group student study sessions has also been designed.

The building, which is set to achieve a BREEAM 'Very Good' rating, will open for the new academic year in September 2016.

Gary Hughes, GRAHAM North of England regional director, said: "This will add another first-class facility to the University of York’s expanding portfolio, and demonstrates its commitment to providing students with the best possible learning experience."

The project is scheduled to be completed this summer.
