Carillion has submitted a planning application to redevelop a city centre site in Sunderland.
The former Vaux Breweries site is the first of five areas to be regenerated under a £100 million scheme by development partnership Siglion.
The collaboration is a joint venture (JV) company set up by the city council and Carillion. It is managed by igloo Regeneration.
Plans for phase one of the project include a 60,000 sq ft office building at the centre of the 5.5 hectare site. In addition, infrastructure work will be developed to continue the Keel Line and landscaping work to enhance the area.
Outline planning approval for the site plan has been applied by Siglion, which includes a range of developments with residential, car parking, retail, hotel, leisure and further commercial elements.
The scheme will also be eco-friendly with natural ventilation and energy efficiency built into the plans. The JV also hopes to achieve a BREEAM 'excellent' green building rating for the construction.
Siglion chief executive John Seager said: "This is the first major speculative office development in Sunderland for many years.
"It will be a substantial building overlooking the river at the end of the Keel Line, and a step change in the quality of development in the city centre."
Consultations are also underway on the four other areas being redeveloped, including a ten acre site at Seaburn, a major housing project at Chapel Garth and sites at Farringdon Row and Numbers Garth.
Mr Seager added: "We've been through a full and open consultation process, and I'm really pleased about the positivity we've found. The plans have been very well-received by local residents and businesses in the city and we've taken on board their comments."
