Work is due to begin on a project to upgrade message signs along the M40, Highways England has announced.

The £1.7 million scheme involves replacing old overhead signs with newer models at various locations between junctions 1A for the M25 and 10 at Ardley.

The project is due to begin on Monday, 18 January.

The first phase of work involves preparing various sites for the new signs and will be carried out in the roadside verges using hard shoulder closures only.

It is understood this work will be completed by the end of January.

The projects second phase involves installing and switching on the new signs, which will start in parallel on 25 January.

Overnight lane closures and slip roads closures will be necessary to carry out this work, Highways England said.

Signed diversions will be in place.

Highways England project manager Neil Doherty said: "This work will ensure better journeys for drivers as they will benefit from the latest technology to get up-to-date information about hazards or delays ahead."
