Anglia Ruskin University has chosen Morgan Sindall to develop a new £25 million science centre at its Cambridge Campus.
The new 7,900 sq m facility will combine teaching, postgraduate and staff amenities for various departments within the Faculty of Science and Technology.
Features include a 300-seat lecture theatre, a 200-seat super-laboratory, staff offices and a range of specialist teaching space.
The red brick building will replace the Bryant and Mellish Clark buildings, with the roof designed to be reminiscent of traditional sheet metal roof cladding.
It is understood the facility will aim to achieve a 'Very Good' BREEAM rating, with 200 sq m of the roof space dedicated to photovoltaic panels.
The centre will save the university over 30% of carbon emissions by using gas more efficiently and generating its own electricity.
Bob Ensch, area director at Morgan Sindall, said: "This new building will provide the university with a centre that offers first-class laboratory and teaching space all under one roof, helping to aid knowledge sharing and collaboration between departments and boosting the department's research capabilities.
"We're very pleased to have been appointed to this project."
In addition, Morgan Sindall is carrying out two further projects for the University of Cambridge.
The firm is building an £8.8m technology hub for the Department of Engineering and is developing the university's £40.8m Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology facility.
