The National Grid is to begin a gas mains improvement project in south-west London.

Engineers will start the eight-week revamp scheme in Twickenham on Monday, 18 January.

The work involves replacing ageing iron gas mains with new longer lasting pipes on St Margarets Road.

The two-stage project will take place on the southbound carriageway and footpath, with the first phase taking place between The Barons and the roundabout at the A316.

The second phase will continue at the opposite side of the roundabout up to the junction with Netherton Road.

Phil Walden, Authorising Engineer at National Grid, said: "This is a major project but we're doing all we can to deliver it with as little disruption as possible.

"Wherever possible we're using innovative technology to insert the new pipe into the old main, which is much quicker than digging up the road to lay new pipe."

National Grid added that traffic management schemes will be implemented to allow the works to be carried out safely.
