Work to upgrade road message signs on the A1 motorway is to begin next week, Highways England has announced.

The work will take place between junctions 15 and 17 near Peterborough from Monday, 07 December.

The project involves removing old overhead message signs and replacing them with new models.

The first phase of work will be carried out in the roadside verges using hard shoulder closures only and should be completed on 22 January 2016.

The second phase will begin on 25 January, while a third phase to turn the signs on will begin between the end of February and March.

It is understood the work will be completed in spring 2016.

Highways England project manager Neil Doherty said: "This work will ensure better journeys for drivers as they will benefit from the latest technology to get up-to-date information about hazards or delays ahead."

During the works diversions will be in place.
