Mott MacDonald has been selected to design a £13 million flood defence scheme near Scunthorpe.
The contract is part of an overall £1.2 billion Lincolnshire Lakes scheme by North Lincolnshire Council.
The project involves creating six new villages containing 6,000 homes, a primary school, a stadium, a community centre and a retirement home on a flood plain to the west of Scunthorpe.
In addition, new access roads, local shops and series of artificial lakes will be built. The project is scheduled to be complete by 2028.
Mott MacDonald's £13m contract involves designing flood defences for 3.6km of the River Trent between the M180 and the southern boundary of Keadby Bridge.
The consultancy will undertake ground investigations studies, provide flood modelling and risk assessments, ecological surveys and screening, planning application and environmental statement advice, stakeholder engagement and the drafting of construction specification documents.
Colin Greensill, Mott MacDonald's project director, said: "One of the key components of the scheme is to deliver a flood management solution which ensures a safe development, free from flooding. North Lincolnshire Council's investment will help prevent any future flooding into the new villages while also help improve flood defences for existing villages as well."
The consultancy's commission is due to be completed early in 2016, with construction estimated to begin shortly afterwards.
