M+W Group Scoops £150m Contract

Construction News Image
M+W Group has secured a £150 million contract to deliver a new waste-to-energy facility in Kingston upon Hull.

The new Energy Works facility will reduce the need for local landfill and will rely on fossil fuel generated power to meet local energy demand.

When completed, the plant will generate up to 28MW of electricity, enough to power the equivalent of 40,000 homes.

M+W's Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract involves redeveloping two adjacent brownfield sites covering an area of 12 acres.

A special high-line conveyor and access route will be created to connect the two sites.

In addition, the new facility will incorporate an educational 'Energy Academy' to promote better understanding of how new technologies and techniques can transform the way waste is managed.

The academy will be run in collaboration with Hull University.

M+W Group will work alongside two main sub-contractors; Outotec, an international specialist in advanced gasification technology; and Spencer Group, the Hull-based engineering and construction business leading the civil engineering works for the new facility.

Construction on the project is due to begin in January 2016, with completion scheduled for summer 2017.
