Queen Reopens Birmingham New Street Station

The Queen has reopened the redeveloped Birmingham New Street Station, it has been announced.

Accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, Her Majesty unveiled a plaque to mark the occasion on 19 November.

The £750m development includes the new Grand Central shopping complex and took five years to complete.

Features of the station include a new atrium over a large passenger concourse, brighter/de-cluttered platforms, improved entrances and a range of new facilities.

Tens of thousands of tonnes of concrete and other materials were removed to create space for the new station.

In addition, 43 shops will also feature at concourse level.

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin, who attended the reopening, said: "Birmingham New Street is a truly remarkable development that is not only providing better journeys for passengers, but also driving economic growth and regeneration across the West Midlands and beyond."
