The A1 carriageway has been reopened following bridge demolition works, Highways England has announced.

Contractors levelled the Fort Bridge during a 34 hour closure as part of a project to upgrade the dual carriageway.

A new bridge is to be rebuilt at a later date.

The improvements are part of a £380 million scheme to wide 12 miles of the A1 in North Yorkshire.

The carriageway will be expanded to a three lane motorway between Leeming and Barton.

In addition, a new local access road alongside the new motorway will be created.

Highways England project manager Tom Howard said: "This was a complex piece of engineering using 35 tonne excavators which is why it was essential we closed sections of the A1."
