M1 Smart Motorways Roadworks To Be Removed

Construction News Image
A set of roadworks developing the smart motorways scheme on the M1 in Derbyshire are to be removed, Highways England has announced.

The government-owned company will lift speed restrictions and remove the narrow lanes on a three-mile section of the motorway on 19 October.

Work is to continue 'behind the scenes' in preparation for the opening of the scheme between junctions 28 to 31 in December.

A second set of roadworks were removed between junctions 30 and 31 on 28 September.

The smart motorways scheme are part of a £15bn investment in motorways and major A roads by 2021.

When complete, overhead electronic message signs will give drivers information about any congestion, lane closures and incidents ahead.

Highways England senior project manager Andy Kirk said: "I'm delighted that we're now in a position where we can remove another set of roadworks on the M1, improving journeys for drivers.

"Work will continue behind the scenes completing various technical tasks until we're ready to implement the smart motorway on this section of the M1 in December."
