The Insolvency Service has confirmed the coke ovens and blast furnace at the SSI Redcar steel mill are to be shut down.
The closure comes due to 'no viable offers' being received from potential buyers after the site's owner Sahaviriya Steel Industries UK went into liquidation on 02 October.
The ovens had been kept operational over the weekend in a bid to allow negotiations with potential buyers.
However, official receiver Ken Beasley said he could no longer "continue to draw on taxpayers funds" to keep the ovens going when there is no "realistic prospect" of a buyer coming forward.
Overall, 2,200 jobs will be lost.
Mr Beasley said: "I am continuing my liquidation of the company, including talking with interested parties about purchasing the company's other assets."
Tom Blenkinsop, Labour MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, said: "This is devastating news for the 2,200 workers who have lost their jobs."
