Highways England has reached a milestone on a £28m project to replace a viaduct in Essex.

Over a period of three days, eight steel beams will be installed across the river Chelmer by the project contractor Graham Construction.

The 35m long, 52 tonne beams will form a new bridge deck for the new A138 Chelmer Viaduct.

The works will begin on Wednesday, 07 October.

The structure will be built alongside the existing bridge to allow access for motorists while work continues.

The old viaduct is to be demolished at a later date.

The project also involves developing three lanes of carriageway along with a shared footway and cycleway.

The scheme is scheduled to be completed in winter 2016.
