Morgan Sindall has won an £8.9 million contract to develop a new primary school in Cambridgeshire.

The single-storey Ermine Street Church Academy is to be built for the county council in Huntingdon.

It is the first school in the new Alconbury Weald development by Urban and Civic.

The project is to include 5,000 new homes on the site of a former airfield.

The first phase of the school is due to open in September 2016. It will eventually accommodate 630 pupils following the second phase of its construction.

The Y-shaped academy will comprise of three separate wings and contain 17 classrooms, with an additional six to be built during phase two of the project.

A learning resource centre and assembly hall will also be developed.

In addition, the building will be partially powered by photovoltaic solar panels and is on track to achieve a BREEAM 'Very Good' rating.

Bob Ensch, area director at Morgan Sindall, said: "The facility will act as a dynamic hub for more than 600 students, providing an engaging educational space for pupils to enjoy and supporting the emerging Alconbury Weald development as it continues to expand."
