EDF Energy has received planning approval to develop a new gas power plant in Lincolnshire.

Proposals for a new facility at Sutton Bridge were approved by Energy and Climate Change Minister Lord Bourne.

The construction phase of the project will create approximately 1,500 jobs.

Once operational, the station will produce up to 1,800MW of electricity and be capable of running continuously throughout the year for up to 35 years.

With planning consent granted, EDF now need to make a final investment decision.

The project is likely to take up to three years to complete.

Energy Minister Lord Bourne said: "We are working to deliver clean, affordable and secure energy supplies for hardworking families and businesses. Continued investment in this vital industry – such as this new power plant – creates jobs but also helps keep the lights on as we move towards a cleaner energy future."
