Work is underway on a £19 million flood defence project in Sheffield, Mott MacDonald has announced.
The consultancy has begun design work on the Sheffield Lower Don Valley flood defence scheme, one of the largest protection projects in the UK.
The company is working for Carillion on its design and built contract with Sheffield City Council.
The project will involve the installation of over 50 interventions along an 8km stretch of the River Don.
Mott MacDonald is to provide the designs for new reinforced concrete walls and earth embankments, as well as repairs and improvements to existing walls and structures.
Colin Greensill, the consultancy's project director, said: "Once complete, the scheme will protect over 500 businesses and thousands of jobs, as well as ensuring that the Lower Don Valley remains an attractive place for new investment."
The project is due to be completed in 2016.
