The Housing Minister Brandon Lewis has called on the country's young people to consider a career in construction.

Mr Lewis made the appeal as he attended an open day at the Hodgkinson Brickwork Academy at Derby College.

He added the industry was improving again due to the Government putting housebuilding at the heart of its long-term economic plan.

"For the last 5 years, our efforts have got Britain building. This means thousands of jobs are now up for grabs – roles that offer a great opportunity to build a successful and well-paid career," he said.

"The Hodgkinson Brickwork Academy is a fantastic example of how a new generation of talented, ambitious, highly skilled bricklayers can be inspired and developed – nurturing our home-grown talent and building the homes we need for years to come."

The brickwork academy, set up in partnership with Derby College, has already seen high demand with over 100 potential recruits attending an open day in June.
