Prestigious Wet Pour Installation At Ynysangharad War Memorial Park

Construction News Image
DCM Surfaces have been part of a huge transformation and restoration of the UK's largest and most historic lidos situated in Ynysangharad War Memorial Park, Pontypridd.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has appointed leading construction company Kier Construction Limited to undertake the extensive work and Kier Construction specified DCM Surfaces as their chosen company to install the wet pour safety surfaces and also rubber mulch surfacing.

In total 1014m² of colourful wetpour was installed onsite with designs also installed, as part of this our team also hand cut a number of imaginative designs into the surface. A further 76m² of rubber mulch surfacing was also installed onsite by DCM Surfaces.

The playground area was designed and an artist provided an impression on how they imagined this to look when completed. DCM Surfaces worked alongside Kier Construction in order to finalise a design, agree on colours and thus install a high quality wet pour safety surface complete with free form designs.

Attracting a lot of attention recently, the restoration of the Grade II-listed Lido is taking place thanks to £3million from the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government, £2.3million from the Heritage Lottery Fund, a £900,000 contribution from Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, and a £100,000 contribution from Cadw.

The lido, which was built in 1927 has a distinctive Mediterranean influence and in its heyday would have accommodated up to around 1000 people. During the post-war years the lido remained a popular attraction which was used by many in the local community.

Sadly in the early 1980s the complex fell into decline resulting in its closure in 1991. The restoration will hopefully create a regional tourist attraction for Pontypridd and with the addition of other sought after facilities there is no reason why visitors will not come and visit Ynysangharad War Memorial Park. This in turn will help to contribute to the economy of the town centre and its wider communities.

DCM Surfaces were extremely privileged to be involved with this particular project, the designs which were created by the artists were brought to life by our team onsite and we feel the creation of the playground will provide a safer area for children to play, learn and grow.

A fantastic success, the restoration, which is due for completion in summer 2015 will hopefully enjoyed by locals and tourists for many years to come.
