University Technical College (UTC) Leeds has announced plans for the redevelopment of a Grade II listed building into a new college facility.

The listed Braime Pressings factory on Hunslet Road will be rebuilt into a 5,200m² college with areas designated for heavy engineering, production lines and a mini factory along with classrooms and lecture-style theatres.

The £11 million investment will create a modern college environment with capacity for 600 pupils aged 14-18.

BAM Construction has been appointed as the main contractor for the development of space within the original factory building.

An application for planning permission has been submitted to the council, prepared by a consultant team including Turley, Mott Macdonald and Race Cottam Architects.

Mark Goldstone, a member of the UTC Leeds steering group, said: "This is a major milestone for the UTC and moves us one step closer to our opening in September 2016."

BAM Bid Manager, John Scahill, said: "We're excited to be part of the team who are responsible for bringing the first UTC to the region, helping to strengthen the engineering heritage of Leeds."
