A new visitor and development centre has opened to the public at EDF Energy's West Burton B gas power station in Nottinghamshire.

The facility will allow visitors to see how electricity is produced first hand and also includes new training facilities for the power station.

The centre is located next to EDF Energy's West Burton A coal power station and close to its nearby Cottam coal power station.

Together the three stations generate enough electricity for nine million homes.

The visitors centre includes hands on displays and guided tours of the modern gas-fired site.

EDF Energy's Chief Executive Officer Vincent de Rivaz and Bassetlaw MP John Mann opened the site on 13 July.

West Burton's gas power station officially opened last year and was EDF Energy's largest single capital investment in the UK.

EDF Energy's CEO Vincent de Rivaz said: "Opening the visitor centre will enable thousands of people from the community and beyond to see how electricity is produced. It will help them understand more about the important energy challenges the country faces as we move towards a low carbon economy."

John Mann MP said: "This new centre is an excellent way of connecting local residents and visitors to the working life of the power stations."
