An excavator has been used to rescue a workman from a four metre hole on a construction site in Oxfordshire.

The worker fell down the hole at the site on the Great Tew Estate, near Chipping Norton on 6 July, suffering breaks to his leg.

Fire crews improvised a excavator to rescue him, tethering a basket stretcher to the machines bucket and lifting the victim out of the hole.

The Fire and Rescue Service Incident Commander, Group Manager David Bray said: "This was an excellent example of partnership working with our colleagues in South Central Ambulance Service, although an unusual incident all crews worked really well together to achieve a successful outcome as the incident required both specialist rescue knowledge & equipment and medical expertise."
