Network Rail has announced a 'significant' upgrade project is due to begin in the North-East of England.
The development is due to start on 15 June and will last five months.
One section of the St James Road bridge, Gateshead, will be completely removed and replaced.
This will allow vehicles weighing over 7.5 tonnes to use the bridge.
The middle section of the structure will be strengthened, refurbished and painted to improve its appearance.
The existing cobbles will be replaced with tarmac across the length of the road surface.
Some of the works will take place during the night and over weekends.
Mark Terry, Route Managing Director for Network Rail, said: "The improvements to St James Road bridge will mean it can remain a key crossing point for the public and those visiting Gateshead International Stadium for many years to come."
A drop-in session for local residents and media will be held on 8 June between 6.30pm and 8.30pm at the sites offices.
Members of the project team will attend the exhibition to provide further information about the development.
The bridge will fully reopen in November.
