The University of Derby has been granted £5 million as part of an investment into a new university centre.

The funding was granted by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

The University will use the £5 million grant as part of a £12 million investment in a new 4,200 square metre building for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The money is part of a wider £200 million investment by HEFCE.

The building is expected to be completed by 2017.

Professor John Coyne, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Derby said: "This is a further vote of confidence in the University and reflects our growing popularity – especially in STEM subjects."

The new building will be constructed to BREEAM 'Very Good" standards.
