Network Rail has announced two bridges being rebuilt for its electrification project have reopened ahead of schedule.

The Stump Lane bridge and Rawlinson Lane bridge were redeveloped as part of Network Rails £1 billion electrification programme in the North West of England.

Four bridges are involved in the programme. They will provide increased clearance to accommodate the overhead lines which will power new electric trains.

The remaining bridges to be opened are:

• Station Road, Blackrod, to reopen on 15 May.

• Chorley Road, Heath Charnock, to reopen on 19 June.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: "These bridge rebuilds are an essential part of the electrification of the railway which will provide passengers with a faster, more reliable and efficient railway.

"The hard work and professionalism of the teams involved has meant that two are able to open quicker than planned, meaning the local roads can return to normal ahead of schedule."
